Your first point of contact for all questions regarding written work is Ulrike Büscher, who can be reached by email at edu-tech@hsbi.de.

You can obtain specialist and professional support specifically for writing papers from the writing advisory service, Dr Kristina Rzehak, by appointment.

5.1 Supervision

I supervise written work in all Edu-Tech modules (Mastery Papers in BP1, term papers in BP2), assignments, practical tasks and project work, as well as final theses (bachelor’s and master’s) in technical, didactic and educational science subject areas.

The first step in the supervision process of term papers and theses is a discussion about the topic of the paper, if it is not given. To prepare for this discussion, please create an exposé and send it to me as a PDF file by email. The exposé should have the form described in this guide. (In principle, the exposé can become the first chapter of your paper in a revised version. You put the effort into the formal design of the exposé at the beginning and then use the file directly to write your paper.)

I will get back to you within a week with a suggested date for a meeting. If your proposed topic is accepted in the first meeting, you can begin working on your written paper. In the case of final theses, the paper must first be officially registered. If there is still a need for changes, you will adjust your exposé after the meeting, and another meeting will take place before you register and begin working on your paper.

While you are writing your paper, I will be available to advise you on content, together with Dr Rzehak and Ms Büscher. If you need advice, please book a consultation and describe your request in the preparatory email so that I know what the consultation will be about. If necessary, please also include the relevant excerpt from your paper.

If you need advice on writing, i.e. if you have questions about the structure and layout of your paper, or if you do not know how to get from your idea to an exposé, or from the exposé to the actual paper, the writing advisor in the IuM department, Dr Kristina Rzehak, is available to help. Please visit hsbi.de/ium/schreibberatung for more information about the services offered, or contact Dr Kristina Rzehak by email (kristina.rzehak@hsbi.de).

5.2 Submission

Once you have completed your work, submit it digitally in the form of a PDF file.

Mastery Papers and term papers are submitted in the ILIAS room for the respective course by uploading a PDF file. Please contact us if you are unable to find the upload option.

The following applies to the submission of Mastery Papers, term papers and practical assignments:

  • BP1 – Mastery Papers (performance records that are mandatory for passing the BP1 module together with the oral examination): It is advisable to complete the papers in a timely manner during the course, as this is the only way to receive feedback. Formally, Mastery Papers can be submitted throughout the semester. To pass the module, it is necessary to complete the performance assessments in the same semester in which the oral examination is taken.
  • BP2 – Term paper (exam required to pass the BP2 module): Term papers can be submitted throughout the semester.
  • Practical assignment (performance in practice-integrated studies): timely upload to the ILIAS course for the module

Bachelor’s and master’s theses are submitted online via upload in accordance with the rules of the examination offices.

5.3 Assessment and evaluation

After the paper has been submitted, the review and assessment process begins, which usually takes four to six weeks. The grade is generally published within six weeks of submission or after the deadline (e.g. for bachelor’s theses and term papers).

The assessment is based on structural, methodological and content-related criteria. The formal criteria can be found in this guide. My entire assessment system can be understood and applied to your own work using the following book:

Jungmann, T. (2025): Final theses from an examiner’s perspective. Writing and self-assessing bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral theses – a guide to achieving the best grade. Herne: Prof. Dr Thorsten Jungmann. (available in the university library)

I wish you every success with your work!
