Task
In phase 1, you work with ILIAS, with an artificial intelligence (AI) service and with Zotero. In this exercise, you learn how to use them for your question. Do task 1 in the exercise time of FTS-02 and tasks 2 to 4 on your own until FTS-03, one after the other. If you get stuck, open the step-by-step guide below the task – and help each other.
1 Join the group of your Sustainable Development Goal
Sign up for your Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) by joining its group in the ILIAS course of this module. Each group has five places; if the group of your SDG is full, choose another SDG.
Step by step
- Open the course of this module: https://www.hsbi.de/elearning/goto.php/crs/1700726
- If ILIAS asks you to, log in with your HSBI user name and password.
- In the course, open the group of your SDG.
- Click ‘Beitreten’ (in English: ‘Join’).
- From now on, the group appears on your dashboard under ‘Meine Kurse und Gruppen’ (‘My courses and groups’).
2 Put your question to your AI service and save its answer
Put your question word for word to the AI service that is specified for your SDG, and save its complete answer with the sources it names. Do this only after you have written down your own answer in the session. Note the date, the name of the service and, where the service shows them, the model and the mode, for example an instant or a thinking mode. You find your AI service in the table in FTS-02, 6.2.
Step by step
- Open the address of your AI service. If the service asks you to, sign in or register.
- If registering is an obstacle for you, use the chat service with artificial intelligence of HSBI (HSBIKI) instead: open HSBIKI Chat at https://www.hsbi.de/dvz/hsbiki/chat and log in with your HSBI user name and password.
- Type your question word for word into the input field and send it.
- Wait until the answer is complete.
- Select the whole answer with the mouse, including the sources it names, and copy it (Windows: Ctrl+C; Mac: Cmd+C).
- Open a new document in Word and paste the answer (Windows: Ctrl+V; Mac: Cmd+V).
- If the service lists its sources separately, copy this list as well and paste it below the answer.
- Above the answer, note the date, the name of the service and, where the service shows them, the model and the mode.
- Save the document in your folder for this module, under a name that you will find again, for example
ChatGPT 2026-10-17 - SDG 1 question a.docx.
3 Check whether a source exists
Check for each source that the AI service names whether it exists and whether it says what the AI service claims. Note the result for each source: exists; exists, but with errors in its details; or not found. If the AI service names no source, note this as your result.
Step by step
- If the source is a link to a web page, open the link. Note whether the page exists and shows the title, the author and the date that the AI service gives.
- If the source has a digital object identifier (DOI), open https://doi.org/ followed by the DOI, for example https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jclepro.2018.08.279. You get to the page of the publication that has this DOI; if the DOI does not exist, doi.org shows ‘DOI Not Found’.
- Search for the title of the source in quotation marks in Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.com
- Search for a book in the library catalogue as well: https://fhb-bielefeld.digibib.net/search/katalog
- Compare the authors, the year, the title and the journal or the publisher with the details given by the AI service. Note each difference.
- If you are not on campus, connect to the virtual private network (VPN) of HSBI.
- If the source exists, open its full text.
- Look for the passage that the AI service refers to, with the search function (Windows: Ctrl+F; Mac: Cmd+F). Note whether the source says what the AI service claims.
⚠ On Springer Nature Link, do not use ‘Log in via an institution’: HSBI is not listed there, and ‘Bielefeld University’ is a different university. Access only works via campus Wi-Fi or VPN.
4 Note a statement with its page in Zotero
Read a text from the source package of your SDG and note in Zotero a statement that you want to use – in your own words, with the short reference and the page. In the group library FTS-resources-1, you can read, but not change anything. Therefore, you work with a copy in your own library, ‘My Library’.
Step by step
- In Zotero, open the group library FTS-resources-1 in the left pane and select the source package of your SDG: the collection named after your SDG, for example ‘Phase1-SDG07’ for SDG 7.
- Drag the entry of the text that you want to read onto ‘My Library’ in the left pane. Zotero copies it into your own library.
- Open ‘My Library’ and select the copied entry. If a file in the Portable Document Format (PDF) is attached to it, continue with step 9.
- Copy the ISBN or the DOI of the text from the pane on the right.
- If you are not on campus, connect to the VPN of HSBI.
- For a book, search for the ISBN in the library catalogue https://fhb-bielefeld.digibib.net/search/katalog and follow the link to the full text. For an article, open https://doi.org/ followed by the DOI.
- Download the full text as a PDF and save it in your folder for this module.
- Drag the PDF from your folder onto the copied entry in the list of items. Zotero attaches the PDF to the entry.
- Double-click the PDF below the entry to open it in Zotero. Read the text in passes, as described in FTS-02, 5.4.
- Select a passage with a statement that you want to use. In the popup that appears, choose a colour: Zotero highlights the passage.
- Go back to your library, right-click the entry in the list of items and choose ‘Add Note from Annotations’. Zotero creates a note with your highlights and links back to the pages of the PDF.
- Below each highlight in the note, write the statement in your own words, with the short reference and the page, for example: ‘According to <author> (<year>, p. <page>), …’
⚠ On Springer Nature Link, do not use ‘Log in via an institution’: HSBI is not listed there, and ‘Bielefeld University’ is a different university. Access only works via campus Wi-Fi or VPN.
