Relates to FTS-01 Introduction to the module and its content
Task
From FTS-02 onwards, you work with ILIAS, Word, Zotero and the full texts of the library. In this exercise, you set them up, so that everything works when you need it. Work through the seven tasks one after the other. If you get stuck, open the step-by-step guide below the task – and help each other.
For tasks 3 and 4, you need the two-factor authentication (2FA) of your HSBI account. If you have not yet set it up, follow the instructions of HSBI first: https://www.hsbi.de/dvz/faq/item/489.
1 Join the ILIAS course
Join the ILIAS course of this module. If you are already a member, tick this task off.
Step by step
- Open the course of this module: https://www.hsbi.de/elearning/goto.php/crs/1700726
- Log in with your HSBI user name and password.
- Click ‘Beitreten’ (in English: ‘Join’).
- From now on, the course appears on your dashboard under ‘Meine Kurse und Gruppen’ (‘My courses and groups’).
2 Read ILIAS in English
Switch the interface of ILIAS to English. The contents of a course stay in the language in which they were written; let your browser translate German pages into English.
Step by step
Switch the language of ILIAS:
- Click your profile picture at the top right and choose ‘Einstellungen’.
- In the section ‘Sprache’, choose English and click ‘Speichern’.
Translate a page in the browser:
- Chrome: Click the icon ‘Translate’ to the right of the address bar and choose English. Alternatively, right-click on the page and choose ‘Translate to English’.
- Edge: Click the translation icon in the address bar, choose English under ‘Translate to’ and click ‘Translate’.
- Safari (Mac): Click the button ‘Translate’ in the Smart Search field and choose English. The button appears only if English is one of your preferred languages under ‘Language & Region’.
- Firefox: Click the translation icon in the toolbar, or right-click on the page and choose ‘Translate page’, then ‘Translate’. ‘Show original’ takes you back.
3 Install the VPN client
Install the client for the virtual private network (VPN) of HSBI and connect once. You need the VPN to open the full texts of the library from home.
Step by step
- Open the software portal https://www.hsbi.de/softwareportal and log in with your HSBI login.
- Download the Cisco Secure Client from the tab ‘Public’ and install it. Instructions for each operating system: https://www.hsbi.de/dvz/faq/cat/7
- Start the Cisco Secure Client, enter the server address
vpn-gate-1.hsbi.deand click ‘Verbinden’ (‘Connect’).- Enter your HSBI user name and password and click ‘OK’.
- Enter the one-time password from your 2FA app and click ‘Weiter’ (‘Next’).
- You are connected. To disconnect, open the client and click ‘Trennen’ (‘Disconnect’).
4 Install Word
Install Word from Microsoft 365, which you can use free of charge as a student of HSBI.
Step by step
- Open https://www.office.com and click ‘Sign in’.
- Enter your HSBI e-mail address and click ‘Next’.
- On the login page of HSBI, enter your HSBI user name and password, then the code of your 2FA app.
- Answer the question ‘Stay signed in?’ with ‘Yes’.
- At the bottom left, choose ‘Apps’, then ‘All apps’ and ‘Install apps’.
- Run the installation. Word is installed together with PowerPoint and Excel. You can install Microsoft 365 on up to five computers.
5 Install Zotero with the Word plugin
Install Zotero, check that Word has a tab ‘Zotero’, add the citation style and set up the synchronization with your Zotero account.
Step by step
- Download Zotero from https://www.zotero.org/download/ and install it.
- Close Word and start Zotero. On its first start, Zotero installs the plugin for Word automatically.
- Start Word. You now find a tab ‘Zotero’.
- If the tab is missing: in Zotero, open the settings (Windows: ‘Edit’ → ‘Settings’; Mac: ‘Zotero’ → ‘Settings’), go to the tab ‘Cite’, section ‘Word Processors’, click ‘Install Microsoft Word Add-in’ and restart Word.
- Add the citation style of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in the name-year system: in the settings, tab ‘Cite’, click ‘Get additional styles…’, search for ‘ISO-690 (author-date, English)’ and click on it.
- Create a free account at https://www.zotero.org if you do not have one. In the Zotero settings, tab ‘Sync’, log in with this account.
6 Join the Zotero group FTS-resources-1
Ask to join my Zotero group, in which I provide the source packages of phase 1.
Step by step
- Log in at https://www.zotero.org with your Zotero account.
- Open https://www.zotero.org/groups/fts-resources-1 and click ‘Join’.
- Your request now waits for my approval (‘Membership Pending’).
- As soon as I have approved it, the group library appears in the left pane of Zotero after the next synchronization.
7 Retrieve a full text
Find the full text of the book Textbook of Green Growth and Technology: Balancing Ecology, Economy, and Equity by Wasswa Shafik in the library with the help of its ISBN, 978-981-95-3632-0, and save the full text on your computer.
Step by step
- If you are not on campus, connect to the VPN (task 3).
- Open the library catalogue https://fhb-bielefeld.digibib.net/search/katalog, enter the ISBN into the search field and start the search.
- Open the hit and follow the link ‘Springer Biomedical & Life Science 2026 (Volltext)’ to the full text on Springer Nature Link.
- Download the full text as a file in the Portable Document Format (PDF) and save it in a folder for this module, under a name that you will find again: surname of the author, year and title, for example
Tyler 1949 - Basic principles of curriculum and instruction.pdf.⚠ On Springer Nature Link, do not use ‘Log in via an institution’: HSBI is not listed there, and ‘Bielefeld University’ is a different university. Access only works via campus Wi-Fi or VPN.
