4.1 Writing programme: Office or LaTeX?

You are free to choose which software you use to write your paper. It is up to your technical capabilities and personal preferences whether you opt for an Office system (Microsoft Word or a free version such as Open Office) or write your paper using the LaTeX typesetting system. The thesis should be submitted online as a PDF file or printed on paper and bound with a PDF file on a data carrier, as described in section 3.1. This can be achieved in either way.

I recommend using the latest version of Microsoft Word.

For writing with LaTeX, Overleaf.com may be a good tip, because you can work securely online here without having to install a LaTeX system on your computer.

Remember that at the end of your work, you must insert the declaration of originality as a signed document into the PDF. You can do this either in a PDF maker such as Adobe Acrobat, or by scanning the page as a high-quality image and inserting it as a full-page image in Word or LaTeX, then converting it into a PDF file with the rest of the pages.

4.2 Literature management: Zotero or Citavi

There are various programmes available for literature management, including Citavi and Zotero. Both programmes are capable of efficiently organising the sources you encounter during your studies and creating citations and bibliographies in accordance with the respective guidelines. As a student, you can usually obtain both programmes free of charge: Zotero is available free of charge at zotero.org. Citavi can also be used free of charge by students thanks to a university licence.

I recommend using Zotero because of its cross-platform compatibility: it works on both Windows and MacOS systems. This is particularly useful if you use different devices with different operating systems. In addition, Zotero integrates well with Word, which greatly simplifies and speeds up the process of citing and creating bibliographies. The software is also open source and available free of charge, making it an attractive option for students. It allows you to collect, organise, cite and share research sources. Zotero also allows you to read and annotate on your tablet.
